About the Call

We are looking for paintings, sketches, photographs & sculptures to capture housing styles of the Southwest based on Pueblo buildings and Pueblo Architecture. Past, Present and Future. The art can reflect anything from a single window to a whole building. We would like pieces that emphasize housing that is connected to community; with historical Pueblo buildings serving as the main inspiration.

Architecture and Art have always had a symbiotic relationship and we would like to showcase images of housing and design elements that are representative of New Mexico and Southwest buildings. See a list of example elements below.

We are also looking for pieces in wood, stone, & metal that are integral to building in New Mexico. The 3D part of the exhibit includes mixed media, sculptures, miniatures, & models. A miniature, sample size wall hanging representing hand-carved doors would be a perfect example.

Inspirations could include:

  • Taos Pueblo

  • Hotel La Fonda de Taos

  • Hopi House

  • Historical photos

  • Pueblo Revival Style Buildings

  • Architects including: William Lumpkins, John Gaw Meem, Mary Colter

  • Live Work Housing (yesterday & today - e.g., Blumenschein)

  • Mixed use Housing & Retail

  • Strong at Heart - Downtown Strategy report for Taos

The architectural elements in the artwork could include:

  • Adobe – Buildings & Walls

  • Corbels & Posts

  • Courtyards

  • Doors & Gates

  • Flat roofs with varied roof lines

  • Kivas & Fireplaces

  • Passive Solar Windows

  • Vigas & Viga Tails
