Frojoles Refritos

Like frijolitos pintos transforming from ham hock–flavored beans to refritos, three veteran Albuquerque artists bring their distinctive flavors north to Taos, where they will mash, merge, and sizzle together in a cultural skillet. Refried Beans opens Friday, September 19, at OmniHum Gallery, and runs through November 2, 2025.

The exhibition features Felix Lucero, Arnold Puentes, and Augustine Romero, artists rooted in Mexicano, Chicano, and Americano traditions who reawaken and rejuvenate cultural expression with a blend of styles that is—like good refried beans—superior to the original. In this gallery of hot lard (manteca), the three artists serve up distinct yet harmonious works, proving there are no has-beans here.
